Princess Sofia Trophy - An excellent day of competition
PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN-(22-3-2005) Active day today at the 36 Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía – Madrid 2012, with excellent S-SW wind conditions from 12 to 15 knots in the Bay of Palma, with some classes sailing up to four races.

In 470 M there is a tight fight for the top positions, being one of the leading teams Spanish sailors Marc Patiño/Omar Juan, that stand a good chance to be in the Spanish pre-Olympic team for Beijing 2008. The leaders are British sailors Nic Asher/Elliot Willis (11 points), with 2 points difference over French team Pallu De La Barriere/Chappellier Aymeric in second place and third place is for French team Dreano/Floch Ronan.

Stefanie Rothweiler/Vivien Kussatz lead the 470W results. The German crew won two of the three races sailed today gaining advantage over the next teams: Sylvia Vogl/Carolina Flatscher from Austria and French sailors Camille/Lemaitre Gwendolyn.

Four races were sailed in the Tornado class, with venue in Club Náutico El Arenal. Irregular performance of the teams on this second day of racing, the first day of sailing for the class. French team Guichard Yann/ Alexandre Guyader (5,6,3,11) lead the overall results and are followed by only one point difference by Spanish sailorsFernando Echavarri/Antón Paz (1,2,2,21), Olympic diploma in Athens 2004. Third place is for Australian team Darren Bundock/Aaron Worrall and German sailors Johannes Polgar/Florian Spalteholz are fourth.

Polish team Marcin Czaykowski/ Krzysztof Kierkowsky and British sailors Stevie Morrison/Ben Rhodes fight for the leading position with equal points (6) in the 49er class after the 3 races sailed today. Third position is for Danish team Meter Hansen/Lillebror Hansen.

In the Finn class only two races were sailed with a thrilling fight between Greek sailor Emilios Papathanassiou and Danish competitor Jonas Hoegh-Christiensen. Emilios leads the overall standings followed by Jonas and third place is for Slovenian sailor Gaspar Vincec. Olympic medallist Rafael Trujillo is fourth overall.

The Swedish and Spanish sailors had a tough fight in the three races sailed in the Europe class. Swedish sailor Sebastian Östling leads the overall results, followed by Spanish sailor Jesús Rigel. Third and fourth position with equal points are for Swedish competitor Christian Harding and Spanish sailor Marc París, followed by Spanish sailor Ignacio Calabria and Portuguese sailor Custódio Martins in fifth place, equal points. The number of entries and the good wind conditions offered excellent sailing today in waters of Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa.

Three races were also sailed in the Mistral class. The leader is Spanish sailor Iván Pastor, who finished 12th at the Athens Olympics and was the winner of the Brazil pre-Olympic regatta. Second place is for Spanish sailor Juan Manuel Moreno followed by Ukranian sailor Maxim Oberemko in third place.

In the Yngling class, Spanish team Mònica Azón/Graciela Pisonero/Sandra Azón maintain the lead (1,5,9) and are followed by just one point difference by French team Anne Le Helley/Marion Deplanque/ Catherine Lepesant. Third place is for Russian team Ekaterina Skoudina/Diana Krutskikh/Tatiana Laen.

Russian boat “My Best” with crew members Vadim Slatsenko/Andry Litsynskyy/Petr Zaharov maintained the leading position. Second place is for Swiss team Ulli Libor/Gunnar Bahr/Jan Schoepe on board “HLL” followed in third place by Danish team Lars Hendriksen/Peter Johansen/Martin Leifeldt, sailing on board “BB-King”.

The new Olympic discipline, the Laser Radial, with venue at Escuela de Vela Calanova, saw the confirmation of the leading US sailor Paige Railey, one of the top sailors toward the 2008 Beijing Olympics. German sailor Wiebke Schröder is second followed in third place by Swedish competitor Karin Söderström.

British sailor Paul Goodison keeps going strong in the Laser class, with four races sailed today. Goodison, has won four of the five races sailed and is at present a firm candidate to become the winner of the 36 Trofeo Princesa Sofía – Madrid 2012. Second place is for Portuguese sailor Gustavo Lima and third place is for British sailor Mark Howard. Spanish competitor Javier Hernández is in the fourth place.

Baleares sailors in the regatta

Among the sailors from Baleares, we can outline 470 Men sailors Marc Patiño/Omar Juan, fourth overall. In 15th place we also find Mallorcan sailors Javier Torres/ Matías Bonet. In the Europe class, Iván Moreno from Ibiza is 12th and Jordi Tur is 15th. Toni Colomar from Menorca is 23rd in the Mistral class while in the Finn fleet, Alberto Vadell, CM San Antonio de la Playa, finished in 28th position.
